The Nigerian Canadian Muslims Congregation, Calgary (NCMCC) is a forum for Nigerian Muslims in Calgary and environs to get together to improve their knowledge and practice of Islam while serving the community and humanity.
We are truly unique in the way we project the best of the blend of Canadian and Nigerian cultures while being Muslims.
The mission of NCMCC is to advance religion by preaching and teaching the principles, religious tenets, doctrines and observance of Islam through education, social, cultural and charitable involvement, and to promote the general welfare of all people.
To establish and maintain an Islamic Centre for its members and the community, with services conducted in accordance with the tents and doctrines of Islam.
The founding families of the Nigerian Canadian Muslims Congregation, Calgary (NCMCC), are those of: Isiaka Jaiyeola, Warisdeen Lawal, Fatai Adebayo, Wale Shokoya, Waheed Sadiq, Ismail Ajenifuja, and Moruf Adegbola. It started out as a gathering of these Nigerian Muslim families hosting iftar at the homes of each of the different families during the Ramadan period in September/October 2006.
At their last iftar gathering in October 2006, the founding families unanimously agreed to morph into a more formal organization that would continue to meet and operate after the Ramadan was over. An interim governing body was then constituted and tasked with the responsibility of executing this idea. The inaugural meeting of the interim governing body was held on October 21, 2006, where bylaw and membership committees were formed to focus on coming up with the guiding principles and community expansion drive.
The founding members held a meeting on November 5, 2006 and decided that a neutral meeting location would be needed to lessen the burden on individual families hosting the group. The idea of partnering with the Nigerian Canadian Association of Calgary (NCAC) to use the Nigerian House for meetings was birthed. The first general meeting at the NCAC Nigerian House location was held on November 12, 2006 and the name Nigerian Muslim Organisation Calgary (NMOC) was chosen for the congregation. A steering committee was constituted to run the association.
The Steering Committee piloted the affairs of the congregation between December 2006 and May 2007 when the inaugural executive council was constituted. The inaugural executive council held their first Exco meeting on Sunday June 17, 2007. The congregation has been run since then by several executive councils (click here to view past executives) and has achieved notable milestones, some of which are captured below:
